The trouble of opening accumulated WhatsApp messages one by one may be over

WhatsApp is working on a new feature that allows you to summarize unread chats in bulk without opening them one by one.

Summary in 10 SecondsWhatsApp is developing a new feature that produces bulk summary for multiple unread chats. The feature is not currently live; It was displayed in the iOS beta version, and similar preparations were previously seen on the Android side. Summaries are prepared with Meta’s Private Processing infrastructure. It is said that Meta and WhatsApp cannot access the message content. This AI feature works optionally and is turned off by default.

WhatsApp is working on a new feature that allows you to summarize unread chats in bulk without opening them one by one. This innovation, which is currently under development, establishes a structure that will allow users to look at their inboxes from a single point and quickly recover, especially if they are behind in more than one conversation. The important difference here is that WhatsApp has already been offering the Message Summaries infrastructure, which can summarize unread messages in a single conversation, in certain markets for a while.

The new step being tested now is to transform this from one chat to a central summary screen covering multiple unread conversations. The feature was seen in the last beta version on the iOS side, and similar working signs had previously appeared on the Android side. A mass summary period is being prepared for unread chats in WhatsApp. The summarization system, officially introduced in WhatsApp today, helps to quickly collect unread messages in a single chat.

The newly tested structure takes this to a more practical point. It is planned to add a direct entry point for unread conversations accumulated in the inbox and from there the user will be able to get an overview of all relevant conversations. In other words, instead of opening a chat one by one and requesting a summary, the accumulated conversations can be summarized collectively. The current version is included in the WhatsApp beta update numbered 26.15.10.71 on the iOS side.

It is reported that the same idea has been brought up before on the Android side. However, it is stated that the feature is not yet available to beta users and is only in the development phase. This shows that we are not talking about a new feature that has recently been opened to everyone, but a step that is being prepared. There was only one chat summary, now it is the inbox’s turn. According to the information on WhatsApp’s official blog, the current Message Summaries feature specifically summarizes the unread messages in a chat.

The company says that it runs this system with Private Processing and that neither Meta nor WhatsApp can see the messages or the special summary created during the summary. Additionally, this feature is turned off by default and can be turned on if the user wishes. The newly tested aggregate summary approach brings this logic to a wider use case. When there are many unread conversations, requesting separate summaries for each conversation wastes time and reduces practicality.

This is where the new interface being tested comes into play: the idea of getting a general summary from the area where unread chats are located is being worked on. The emphasis on privacy is again put at the center. The most critical aspect of this feature is that it puts the claim of privacy at the center, even though it is AI-supported. According to Meta’s technical description, Private Processing uses a confidential processing infrastructure based on the Trusted Execution Environment.

Requests are sent to this secure environment in an end-to-end encrypted manner, and messages are not accessed after the transaction is completed. Meta had also previously clearly explained that this structure was developed for usage scenarios such as message summarization and writing assistance. User control also stands out in WhatsApp’s official narrative. The company says that features that use Private Processing are optional, and that the use of messages for AI features can be limited in certain chats with the Enhanced Chat Privacy setting.

This means that the new bulk summary system will not only maintain speed, but also control over which chats will be included in this scope. What is not clear for now is when this bulk summary screen will open in which markets and in which languages. On the official side, there is information that single chat summaries are gradually being rolled out in selected markets, but the release schedule for multi-unread chat summaries has not been shared yet.
