MUŞ (AA) – Traveling beekeepers from different provinces of Turkey started to place their hives in the Muş Plain. Offering favorable opportunities for beekeeping with its rich vegetation, wide pastures and high-altitude plateaus, Muş is among the frequent destinations of traveling beekeepers this year as well. Beekeepers from Diyarbakır, Şanlıurfa and surrounding provinces, especially Ordu and Muğla, started their preparations for the season by placing their hives in the plain.

Provincial Director of Agriculture and Forestry Necattin Gönç told members of the press that they expect approximately 650 tons of honey production in the city this year. Stating that Muş has a serious potential in terms of beekeeping, Gönç said: “One of the important agricultural activities in our city is beekeeping. Beekeeping should not only be considered production-oriented, but is also of great importance for the sustainability of the ecosystem and biodiversity.

Our city, which has a very suitable structure for beekeeping activities with its mountains, plateaus and rich plant flora, is one of the first stopping points for migratory beekeepers thanks to these advantages. Migrant beekeepers from different provinces come to our city in May and June and stay in our city, and move to different regions in August.” Stating that approximately 710 mobile beekeepers came to the city with 290 thousand hives last year, Gönç stated that so far this year, 200 mobile beekeepers have reached the city with 65 thousand beehives.

Pointing out the strong potential of Muş in the field of beekeeping, Gönç said, “As of this year, the number of hives in our city has reached 60 thousand. “There was an increase of approximately 3 percent compared to the previous year.” he said. Hasan Yılmaz, who has been engaged in beekeeping for about 50 years, said: “With the arrival of spring, we return to the Muş Plain. “After staying in the plains for about 20 days, we go to the high altitude plateaus of Muş.” he said.
