WhatsApp Tests “Delete After Read” Feature

WhatsApp has started testing its new privacy feature in the iOS beta version, which allows messages to be automatically deleted within a certain period of time after being read.

WhatsApp is working on a new feature to increase message privacy for iOS users. This innovation, tested in the beta version of the application, ensures that messages are automatically deleted after they are read. The new feature was evaluated as an expanded version of the existing “disappearing messages” infrastructure. The feature will allow users to more flexibly determine how long messages will remain visible. How Does the “Delete After Reading” System Work?

With the new feature tested, users can choose a specific timer for messages. These options include durations such as 5 minutes, 1 hour and 2 hours. The system has a two-stage working logic: The sent message is deleted from the sending device after the specified period of time. On the receiver’s side, the time starts when the message is read. It was stated that if the message is never opened, the system performs automatic deletion after 24 hours.

Revealed in iOS Beta Version The new feature was detected in beta version 26.19.10.72 published for iOS. It has been seen that the system, which was previously tested on Android, has now started to be available to iPhone users. It is not yet clear when the feature will be available to all users. It is expected to move to the stable version after the testing process is completed. Privacy-Focused New Messaging Experience The new system aims to provide a more controlled experience, especially when sharing sensitive content.

The feature, which works similar to the existing “View Once” feature, leaves the permanence of messages to user control.
