The US Navy has launched the USS Harvey C. Barnum Jr., an Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer. (DDG 124) was officially put into service with a ceremony held at Norfolk Naval Base on April 11, 2026.

The ship takes its name from Medal of Honor recipient Harvey C. Barnum Jr., who participated in the Vietnam War. It is also the first floating platform named after Barnum in the US Navy.

The destroyer was put into service at a ceremony attended by senior military officials such as Navy Secretary John C. Phelan and Marine Corps Commander Eric M. Smith; It is designed for multi-mission operations including air defense, surface warfare and anti-submarine warfare.

Equipped with the Aegis Combat System and capable of operating in any threat environment, USS Harvey C. Barnum Jr. began its active duty in the US Navy’s surface fleet with this ceremony.
