ANKARA (AA) – Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri Ersoy stated that Haydarpaşa has not only been preserved as a transportation axis, but also has become the city’s culture, art and life point, and that it will be one of the most important attractions of the city when it is completed. According to the statement made by the Ministry, restoration and transformation works are continuing rapidly at Haydarpaşa Train Station, which is one of the iconic buildings in Istanbul’s memory with its history of more than a century.
Minister of Culture and Tourism Ersoy, who inspected the area, shared the details of the work carried out in the historical station area with the public for the first time. Stating that Haydarpaşa Train Station is one of the starting points of the Anatolia-Baghdad railway line with its approximately 130-year history, Ersoy noted that Haydarpaşa is the connection point of all Anatolia to Europe and the West. Stating that Haydarpaşa is not just a transportation point, Ersoy stated that it hosts the migration, journey and memories of millions of people.
Minister Ersoy said, “Many statesmen moved from here. Many artists and millions of our citizens moved from here.” he said. – “Closed quarries were reopened so that some stones could be reused.” Stating that extensive research was carried out in the region before the restoration work, Ersoy stated that the history and memory of the area was examined in detail and the restoration process was carried out under the supervision of the Scientific Board.
Stating that sensitivity was shown to the use of original materials in the works, Ersoy said, “In order for some stones to be reused, closed quarries were reopened, the stones were removed from there and put into use again here.” gave the information. – The first stage will be ready for the Istanbul Cultural Road Festival. Minister Ersoy continued his words as follows: “This is a very important transportation axis and this feature is preserved.
In Haydarpaşa, not only the transportation axis feature is preserved, but also it is turned into the culture, art and life point of the city, and when it is completed, Haydarpaşa will be one of the most important attraction points of the city. We aim to finish it in two stages. Our goal is to prepare the first stage, mainly the part, for the Istanbul Culture Road Festival.” – The Archeology Museum and the archeopark will be implemented together.
Stating that the waiting areas and multi-purpose halls will be preserved in the main station building in Haydarpaşa, Ersoy stated that the building will function as both a station and an exhibition. Ersoy announced that the approximately 6 thousand square meter building located right next to the station will be turned into a library complex that will appeal to all age groups. Giving information that digital museum areas will be created in the station area, Ersoy stated that the first archaeological museum of the Anatolian Side will be realized with an archaeopark area of approximately 15 decares in the region.
Ersoy said, “There is almost no other application in the world where the museum and the archaeopark are so close and intertwined. Haydarpaşa will be a first in this respect.” he said. Ersoy stated that the “Four Seas Museum” concept was also worked on in Haydarpaşa, and that the curator of the project was Luca Molinari, one of the curators of the Venice Biennale, and noted that Molinari was an internationally important art consultant and designer, and that his vision of culture and design was also prioritized in the project.
Pointing out the lack of large-scale cultural and artistic areas on the Anatolian Side, Ersoy emphasized that Haydarpaşa will meet an important need. – “We are also preserving and activating the features of Haydarpaşa as a transportation axis.” Minister Ersoy said, “Haydarpaşa will actually bring the function of a complex such as the Atatürk Cultural Center, which we realized on the European Side, to the Anatolian Side.” made his assessment.
Minister of Culture and Tourism Ersoy said: “When you look from the air, we are actually providing a point of exit to the sea for all our citizens on the Anatolian Side in a very comfortable and pleasant environment. We are also building large event areas where all kinds of events will be held throughout the day. There was a real need for such a living oasis on the Anatolian Side. We think it will fill a very important deficiency.
But while doing these, we also preserve and activate Haydarpaşa’s primary function of being a transportation axis. It is easy for citizens to get here.” In order to be accessible, all these sea, railway and road transportation axes must work well. “The whole project was shaped this way.” – Haydarpaşa coast will be opened to public use again. Comprehensive ground improvement, structural strengthening and restoration works are continuing in the Haydarpaşa Train Station building.
A new archaeological museum with a closed area of approximately 10 thousand square meters is being built at the station site. In the museum, designed with a marine theme, it is planned to exhibit distinguished works brought from 81 provinces of Turkey. An event area for approximately 20 thousand people is also being created at the Haydarpaşa Train Station site. Within the scope of the project, landscaping arrangements will be made in an area of approximately 150 thousand square meters.
Haydarpaşa beach will be opened to public use again.
