İZMİR (AA) – İzmir Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Director Aytaç Yalçınkaya said that 2 thousand 103 inspections were carried out throughout the city in the first 5 months of the year, and a total of 132 million 918 thousand 897 lira fines were imposed on 132 companies determined to pollute the environment. A ceremony was held in Cumhuriyet Square in Izmir on the occasion of June 5 World Environment Day and Türkiye Environment Week.
After laying a wreath at the Atatürk Monument, a moment of silence was observed and the National Anthem was sung. İzmir Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Director Aytaç Yalçınkaya said in his speech that they celebrated Türkiye Environment Week this year with the slogan “The World is Entrusted to Us”. Stating that Turkey and Izmir, especially those located in the Mediterranean Basin, feel the effects of the climate crisis more and more each day, Yalçınkaya said: “As the İzmir Provincial Directorate of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, we continue our activities with determination in many areas, from zero waste practices to environmental inspections, from environmental training to studies on combating climate change.
One of the most important reflections of these studies in the field is our environmental inspection activities. In this context, our Directorate carried out 2 thousand 103 inspections in the first 5 months of 2026, and a total of 132 million 918 thousand 897 liras of administrative sanctions were imposed on 132 businesses that were found to be engaged in activities contrary to the legislation.” After the speech, an exercise was held to prevent marine pollution.
In accordance with the scenario, teams regarding the pollution detected on the sea surface carried out cleaning work under the coordination of Izmir Regional Port Authority. In addition, the students who were successful in the painting competition organized within the scope of Türkiye Environment Week were given awards by the protocol members.
