MUĞLA (AA) – Ghost net and sea cleaning were carried out in Bodrum district of Muğla with the participation of Governor İdris Akbıyık. The event, organized by the Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry, under the auspices of Muğla Governorship, in order to raise awareness about the protection of the marine ecosystem, was held off the coast of Gündoğan District. While sea bottom cleaning was carried out in Gündoğan Fishing Shelter, ghost net cleaning was carried out in the open sea section.
During the work, approximately 2 thousand square meters of ghost nets, which pose a threat to marine creatures, were removed from the sea. At the event, protocol members and participants, including Governor Akbıyık, introduced 25 thousand baby sea bass to the sea in order to contribute to increasing the fish population in the sea. Governor Akbıyık told reporters after the event that Bodrum’s sea is one of the cleanest seas in the world.
Stating that they saw a group of dolphins during the work, Governor Akbıyık said, “Dolphins welcomed us. This environment day was a different beauty. The world is our home, these seas are nature, the environment is not the personal property of any of us. We will protect our seas, our land and our nature.” “We will protect and develop them in the best way possible and hand them over to new generations.” he said. Stating that the ghost nets in the sea were pulled by the Provincial Directorate of Agriculture staff and young people together, Akbıyık said: “Provincial Directorate of Agriculture teams have scanned more than 1 million 500 thousand square meters of sea area in approximately 10 years, worked at 218 different points, 154 thousand square meters of ghost nets and 151 tons of vaults were cleaned.
Here, we have just removed approximately 2 thousand square meters of ghost net. Keeping the seas clean is not only the duty of the state, but also the duty of everyone who breathes this air. We need to raise our youth in the best way possible regarding environmental awareness.” Pointing out that many studies have been carried out with the slogan “The World is Our Common Home” within the scope of the “Zero Waste Movement” under the leadership of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s wife, Emine Erdoğan, Akbıyık said, “This has now gained an international dimension and we prevent direct waste and pollution at the source with zero waste.
Most importantly, we do not waste it. In this sense, we make a great contribution to both the environment, nature and economy with this project. We also have an electric boat project in Dalyan. “We are making preparations right now.” he said. Bodrum District Governor Ali Sırmalı, Muğla Provincial Director of Agriculture and Forestry Seyfettin Baydar, Bodrum Chief Public Prosecutor Behçet İşlek, institution chiefs, fishermen and young people attended the event.
