Netflix is taking artificial intelligence-supported content production out of the testing phase and making it a separate part of its own production structure. Information seen in the company’s job postings and industry records shows that a new animation studio called INKubator, or INK for short, has been established within Netflix. This unit is structured to prepare short-form animations and special content with productive artificial intelligence-based workflows.
Netflix’s new AI studio focuses on short-form animations. Netflix’s INKubator plan has not yet become an official announcement. Despite this, job postings published by the company reveal that the recruitment process is being carried out in the roles of producers, software engineers, CG artists and technical team for the new unit. LinkedIn profiles indicate that the unit began operating quietly in March. On the management side of the studio is Serrena Iyer, who has a background at DreamWorks Animation, MRC Studios and A24 Films.
Netflix describes INKubator in job postings as a “creator-focused, GenAI-native animation studio.” The postings reveal that the unit’s long-term technology strategy is built on productive AI-powered workflows, artist tools and scalable secure multi-production environments. With this structure, the company also uses the expression of developing feature-length content. The new structure, in the first stage, works on short-form animations and special content instead of feature films.
Job postings state that INKubator will prepare animated short films and special projects with experimental GenAI-native production lines. However, at least one job posting also shows that the technology may be moved to longer-format content in the future. This move by Netflix is part of the new era in which the company has more strongly placed artificial intelligence in the content production line. The company acquired InterPositive, co-founded by Ben Affleck, at the beginning of this year.
InterPositive develops artificial intelligence tools that focus on visual logic, editing consistency, and real production problems in film production, such as missing shots or faulty lighting. According to the information provided by Reuters, Affleck is working as a senior consultant at Netflix after the acquisition. While InterPositive focuses more on the post-production side, INKubator stands out as a more comprehensive structure that is located directly within the content production line.
This difference shows that Netflix will use artificial intelligence not only as an effects correction, scene completion or post-production support tool, but also in the production of new animation formats. The most striking connection of this development on the user side is the Clips stream in Netflix’s mobile application. Netflix has started to introduce the Clips tab in its mobile application, which offers a vertical video experience similar to TikTok and Instagram Reels.
This tab currently contains short clips from TV series, movies and Netflix content; Podcasts and live event clips are planned to be added to this area in the future. INKubator’s focus on short-form animations shows that Netflix has established a production line where it can use more original short content on the mobile streaming side. The company’s current Clips structure currently focuses on promotion and discovery.
However, the establishment of a separate AI studio for short-form animation production reveals that Netflix creates a stronger content flow not only with long series and movies, but also with content consumed quickly on mobile. Netflix has also published rules for its production partners for the productive use of artificial intelligence. The company describes its AI tools as valuable creative aids, but is asking production partners to share their planned use of GenAI with Netflix representatives.
Written approval is required in cases where content included in final submissions involves actor likeness, personal data or third party intellectual property.
