KAHRAMANMARAŞ (AA) – An event was organized in Kahramanmaraş by the Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism to introduce city-specific flavors within the scope of Turkish Cuisine Week. At the event held at the Metropolitan Municipality Çamlıca Facilities, Kahramanmaraş’s unique culinary culture and registered flavors were exhibited. In his speech at the event, Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Fırat Görgel said that Kahramanmaraş cuisine is nourished by Anatolian culinary tradition and bears the traces of the Ottoman palace cuisine.
Stating that they continue to work to make the gastronomy potential of the city more visible, to support local producers and to ensure the registration of traditional products, Görgel said: “Today, Kahramanmaraş has 31 geographically indicated products. Maraş tarhana, Maraş bun and Çağlayancerit walnut are among our products registered by the European Union. As you all know, we have recently registered our peanut paste.
“We are working to register 50 of our new products, from Maraş pistachios to Göksun apples, from Maraş olives to Abbas figs.” Görgel said that a cookbook containing more than 600 recipes, bearing the historical traces of the city and consisting entirely of local products, has been prepared. Deputy Provincial Director of Culture and Tourism Ayten Şenel stated that Turkish cuisine is not just about food and said that it is an important heritage that allows thousands of years of experience and knowledge to be transferred between cultures.
After the speeches, local dishes reflecting the culture of weddings, holidays and daily life were served to the participants. Governor Mükerrem Ünlüer, Kahramanmaraş Sütçü İmam University (KSÜ) Rector Prof. attended the program. Dr. İbrahim Taner Okumuş, Rector of Istiklal University (KİU) Prof. Dr. İsmail Bakan, Deputy Provincial Culture and Tourism Director Ayten Şenel, political party representatives and citizens attended.
