SAKARYA (AA) – Swimming is not allowed around the cargo ship that ran aground on May 1 in Karasu district of Sakarya. A pontoon was pulled up by lifeguard teams under the supervision of the Coast Guard Command teams around the Cameroon-flagged dry cargo ship named NINOVA, which drifted into the Black Sea due to adverse weather conditions and ran aground in the Karasu district. By the decision of the Karasu District Governorship, it was evaluated that entering the sea in the region was dangerous.
Swimming is not allowed in the area where a safe area has been created with pontoons. Sakarya Metropolitan Municipality Fire Department Lifeguard Chief Samet Karaca told reporters that the area where the ship ran aground was closed to people. Stating that a decision was taken in this direction, Karaca said, “Especially in stormy seas, when the wave height rises, it is not possible to rescue from there or to reach a possible problem, so it was decided to close that area to sea use in order not to risk our own personnel and to protect the health of the citizens.” he said.
Stating that red buoys were installed and markings were made in the area, including the lifeguard area, Karaca stated that that area would not be under the responsibility of the lifeguard. The 80-meter-long dry cargo ship named NINOVA, flagged by Cameroon, drifted in the Black Sea on May 1 due to adverse weather conditions and ran aground in the Karasu district. The crew of 8 people, 1 Turkish and 7 Azerbaijani nationals, were rescued by the trolley system.
Within the scope of the plan to save the ship, divers made 3 inspection dives, a protective floating barrier was installed around the ship to prevent possible leakage into the sea on May 8, and the work to remove pollutants began on May 20. 11The water discharged from a height of 173 meters at the Karakaya Dam and Hydroelectric Power Plant (HEPP) in Çüngüş district of Diyarbakır turned into a visual feast. The amount of water in the basin of Karakaya Dam and HEPP, Turkey’s third largest dam and second largest hydroelectric power plant, reached 9.5 billion cubic meters with heavy rainfall.
In the Karakaya Dam and HEPP, which has an installed capacity of 1800 megawatts with a total of 6 units, 2 discharge gates of the dam were opened in the first place on May 11, after 7 years, against the risk of possible floods due to the water level approaching the maximum level. The discharge of pressurized water from the dam set, whose body height is 173 meters, turned into a visual feast. Rainbows occasionally form in the region due to sunlight.
