STOCKHOLM (AA) – Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, Numan Kurtulmuş, met with the President of the Swedish Parliament (Riksdag), Andreas Norlen, in Stockholm, where he paid an official visit. Speaker of the Turkish Grand National Assembly Kurtulmuş was welcomed with an official ceremony by his counterpart Norlen upon his arrival at the Riksdag. After the two parliamentary speakers shook hands in front of the Turkish and Swedish flags, Kurtulmuş introduced the accompanying Turkish Grand National Assembly delegation.

After signing the Swedish Parliament Honor Book, Turkish Grand National Assembly Speaker Kurtulmuş visited the General Assembly Hall with Norlen and received information. Kurtulmuş and Norlen later had a one-on-one meeting and chaired the inter-delegation meeting. During the meeting between the delegations, Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey Kurtulmuş expressed his hope that this visit, upon the invitation of his counterpart Norlen, would make significant contributions to Türkiye-Sweden relations.

Stating that he was pleased to see that bilateral relations gained positive momentum thanks to this visit from Turkey at the level of the Speaker of the Parliament after 15 years, Kurtulmuş also wished that this visit with the Turkish Grand National Assembly delegation would contribute to the existing relations between the governments and lead to rapprochement between the parliaments. Stating that the historically existing relations gained a new dimension and reached the partnership dimension with the acceptance of Sweden to NATO membership, Kurtulmuş noted that he was pleased that his counterpart Norlen would attend the NATO Parliamentary Summit to be held in Istanbul on 28-29 June.

Stating that there is a close contact between the friendship groups of the two parliaments, Kurtulmuş said that they wish to act together in friendship groups, specialized commissions and other international studies. Numan Kurtulmuş pointed out that there is cooperation between Türkiye and Sweden in many areas and that there is a significant potential to expand these and increase bilateral trade. Stating that the presence of approximately 150 thousand Turkish population in Sweden creates a strong bridge between the two countries, Kurtulmuş stated that the good integration of Turkish citizens here into the Swedish society is valuable for both countries.

Stating that cooperation in the field of tourism can be increased, Kurtulmuş noted that they were pleased to host 406 thousand Swedish tourists in Turkey last year and that they would like to host more Swedish tourists in the coming period. Emphasizing that they wish to increase cooperation by continuing joint work in many different fields such as the defense industry, high technology, and the fight against terrorism, Kurtulmuş underlined the importance of resolutely continuing the joint fight against terrorism with the Turkey-Finland-Sweden joint mechanism.

Noting that Turkey’s accession process to the European Union (EU), which is an integral part of Europe, continues to be a strategic goal, Kurtulmuş stated that Turkey’s expectation from the EU is to adopt a fair, merit-based inclusive approach towards Turkey. Expressing that they find Sweden’s support for Turkey’s EU membership important, Kurtulmuş pointed out that EU-Türkiye relations have also become important for the future and security of Europe.

The Speaker of the Swedish Parliament, Norlen, expressed his pleasure in hosting the Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, Kurtulmuş, and his accompanying delegation in Stockholm and said that he believed that this visit from Turkey at the level of the Speaker of the Parliament after 15 years would further develop the good relations between the two countries. Norlen stated that there is cooperation between the two countries in many areas and that they became allies after NATO membership.

Following the meeting, TBMM Speaker Kurtulmuş visited the Swedish Parliament General Assembly, greeted the MPs and followed the work for a while. During the meeting, Turkey-Sweden Inter-Parliamentary Friendship Group Chairman and AK Party Konya Deputy Abdullah Ağralı, Turkey-Finland Inter-Parliamentary Friendship Group Chairman and AK Party Istanbul Deputy Tuğba Işık Ercan, GNAT Administrative Chief and DEM Party Bingöl Deputy Ömer Faruk Hülakü, GNAT Administrative Chief and MHP Gaziantep Deputy Sermet Atay, GNAT Clerk Member and CHP Tekirdağ Deputy Nurten Yontar, AK Party Mardin Deputy Faruk Kılıç and Turkey’s Stockholm Ambassador iyorum Can Tezel were also present.
