MUĞLA (AA) – Stratonikeia Ancient City, located in the Yatağan district of Muğla and home to many civilizations, welcomes its visitors during the Eid al-Adha holiday. Stratonikeia, which was called the city of gladiators because it hosted the largest sports school in the region in the past, takes its visitors on a historical journey. Head of Excavation Prof. Dr. Bilal Söğüt said that excavations and restoration works are being carried out in many parts of the ancient city in Eskihisar District, and this has greatly increased the interest in the city.
Söğüt pointed out that the buildings from the Classical and Hellenistic periods, as well as the Roman, Byzantine, Menteşe Principality, Ottoman and Republican periods were preserved as a whole, and noted that restoration work was carried out on many houses in the city and the historical village texture was kept alive in its original form. Stating that visitors can see baths, mosques, houses and all the structures that have survived from the ancient period to the present day, Söğüt said that all the structures dating back 3,500 years are located in the same area and that visitors can see them, sit under the historical plane trees in the village square, as well as the ancient structures and ruins, and live by feeling the historical atmosphere.
Stating that the city hosts different visitor groups due to its features, Söğüt noted that there has been a significant increase in the number of local and foreign visitors recently, that the number of those coming in special groups has increased significantly, and that many visitors came to the city during the Eid al-Adha holiday. It was seen that many visitors to Muğla and its districts due to the Eid al-Adha holiday came to the city and examined the historical buildings one-on-one.
