ÇANAKKALE (AA) – BURAK AKAY/MEHMET YAVAŞ – Traditional products prepared by women in Bektaş village with a population of 360 in Çanakkale’s Ayvacık district are offered for sale through the cooperative they established. 17 women living in the village founded a cooperative 2 years ago in order to turn their manual labor into profit, support rural production, protect cultural heritage and develop sustainable economic models.
The cooperative, covering 9 villages in the region, received support from rural development projects carried out by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). Cooperative members benefited from technical support, training and visibility activities within the scope of local development-oriented studies after the establishment process. Supported in line with the rural development, women’s cooperatives, local production and sustainable agriculture policies of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, the members carry out technical collaborations on the development of forest villagers, biodiversity, medicinal aromatic plants and rural production models.
Women who also participate in studies supported by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) receive support for adding value to local products, supporting women’s production and nature-friendly production models. In the cooperative, women prepare many local products, from tomato paste to tarhana, from noodles to broad beans, and sell the traditional “mule nail” jam from the Ayvacık region. In addition, women continue to produce traditional fabrics such as carpets, rugs, ehrams, sandpipers and cloth weaving in the cultural heritage workshop established within the cooperative.
All products manufactured by women are sold in the cooperative building via the website and social media platforms. – The number of members increased to 25. Bektaş Village Women’s Labor Agricultural Development Cooperative President Güldan Özkan told the AA reporter that their cooperative was established 2 years ago. Stating that the establishment phase of the cooperative started with 3 people, then 17 women came together, Özkan said that they now have 25 members.
Özkan stated that they produce jam, tarhana, noodles and many other local products in the food section of the cooperative and said, “There is a mule’s hoof in our logos. We have tomato pastes and spice types according to the season. Laurels, fennel, thyme and daisies are collected and we produce tea. We make our own bread and sell it here.” “We also started our local breakfast.” he said. Referring to the cultural heritage workshop within the cooperative, Özkan said: “This is the area where carpet and shuttle fabric weaving is made.
The products that our elders unpacked come to life again here. We turned our grandmothers’ shalwars into pillows, bags, wallets and souvenirs. I have been weaving carpets for 45 years, I learned when I was a child. Here, too, there are those who want to learn, those who are curious, and those who want to preserve the carpet and cultural heritage. “We will coach them and teach them in the courses we will open in our cooperative.” – “We contribute to cultural tourism here” Esma Civcir, cultural heritage projects consultant of the cooperative, said that they implemented the cultural heritage workshop after the cooperative’s food production area started operating.
Stating that fabrics and carpets from the Ayvacık region are woven in the workshop, Civcir said, “In addition to producing first-class new products, this is also a transformation and zero waste workshop. “Fabrics that are thrown away because they have ‘chest stains’ are reproduced with new solutions and new designs.” he said. Pointing out that value-added production is carried out here, Civcir said: “We contribute to cultural tourism here.
In terms of the sustainability of our cultural heritage, this place has become a weaving academy. Our female weavers support professional training in the weaving academy. Anyone who wishes can participate in a special program. Those who wish can come as a group. Those who wish can stay in the region for a month for holiday purposes, have a holiday, and receive weaving therapy training at the same time, adding a new dimension to their lives.” 116Traditional products prepared by women in Bektaş village, with a population of 360 in Çanakkale’s Ayvacık district, are offered for sale through the cooperative they established.
