ANKARA (AA) – AYNUR EKİZ – AK Party Deputy Chairman Ömer İleri stated that the contribution of the opposition mentality of that period in the days leading up to the coup of May 27, 1960 should be revealed and said, “It should be stated that this is wrong and an apology should be made for it. This nation deserves it. Because this coup process caused great damage to this nation. The approach put forward by the Chairman of the Republican People’s Party of that period should be examined.” he said.
In his statement to the AA correspondent, İleri talked about his grandfather, Ahmet Tevfik İleri, who held various ministerial positions, including the Ministry of National Education, in the Democratic Party governments between 1950 and 1960, and made evaluations about the coup period of May 27, 1960. Stating that Tevfik İleri was one of the actors who had an important political struggle with the late Prime Minister Adnan Menderes, who was executed in 1961 after the coup and went down in Turkey’s history as a “martyr of democracy”, İleri said that he could not meet his grandfather and that he always felt sad about it.
Explaining that his grandfather was a man who managed to stand tall even in those difficult days of Yassıada and burned with love for the homeland and nation, İleri said, “He left us a name that we are proud of, but he also left us an important responsibility. Today, I am very proud to continue the same struggle in the staff of our President.” he said. – “His ideals, his love for the homeland and nation were always made felt by us.” Explaining that the Democratic Party staff, including his grandfather Tevfik İleri, were in a rush to serve at a time when Turkey was experiencing a truly multi-party experience for the first time, when there were international turmoil and serious problems within the country, İleri said, “One night, at dawn, these people were taken from their homes and imprisoned in the hell called Yassıada.” he said.
Emphasizing that the coup of May 27, 1960 was a trauma for both Turkey and his family, İleri said, “But Tevfik İleri always made his presence felt in our family. His ideals, his love of homeland and nation were always made felt by us. We knew that it is difficult to serve this nation, and those who serve this nation also have enemies. But despite this, it is essential to serve.” “This is how we were raised.” he said.
Stating that the 1946 elections were unique in the world, İleri reminded that the control of the elections held with the open ballot and closed counting method was not in the Supreme Electoral Board, but in the governorships, the ballot papers were burned, but despite this, the Democratic Party was successful. İleri said that he saw the CHP’s transition to multi-party life as “unnecessary” in a sense, and that this was reflected in the statements of the leading CHP figures of that period.
Ileri stated that the CHP administration of the period saw the political liberalization and democratization efforts that started right after the Second World War as a desire to imitate and that the administration would oppose such imitations, ideas and trends, and that Şükrü Saraçoğlu, one of the leading figures of the period, evaluated the single-party rule as “not only a regime that meets the needs of Turkey, but also a regime that will set an example for the whole world”.
– “That coup not only caused Turkey to lose time, it disrupted Turkey’s chemistry.” Reminding that one of the most important events that led Turkey to the military coup of 27 May 1960 was the street events on 28-29 April 1960, İleri said that the CHP personally played a role in organizing these events, and that they knew this from the memories of the then CHP Youth Branch President Orhan Birgit and the members of the National Unity Committee.
“The coup they carried out not only caused Turkey to waste time, but also damaged Turkey’s chemistry.” Making his evaluation, İleri underlined that today, under the leadership of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, a very important struggle is being waged against tutelage. Forward said, “Unfortunately, the destructive opposition mentality inherited from that period still continues. With the discretion of this nation, hopefully this destructive opposition mentality will be put to rest.” he said.
– Chief Prosecutor Egesel applied to become a member of parliament from the DP, which he accused of “dictatorship”. In the Yassıada hearings, İleri criticized the Democratic Party members by saying, “You tried to lead this country to dictatorship with the laws you passed since 1953.” He explained that the accusing Chief Public Prosecutor, Ömer Egesel, applied to become a member of parliament from the Democratic Party in 1954.
Ömer İleri explains the statements of the people in the CHP administration in the period leading up to the coup of May 27, 1960: “Unfortunately, the understanding of the Republican People’s Party of the period encouraged the coup process. It was involved in the coup process. It was mobilized to legitimize this process in the period after the coup. The establishment of Yassıada courts is also a part of this process.” He evaluated it with his words.
– “The biggest harm of May 27 was that it disrupted the approach to politics in Turkey.” Stating that Turkey’s industrialization was stopped in the 1940s and that the Democratic Party period, on the contrary, was a period in which industrialization accelerated, he said that at that time, slogans were made such as “The Democratic Party left the farmers landless to please the landlords”, but the party made a regulation on July 1, 1952 for landless peasants to become landowners.
Noting that while the number of families cultivating their own land was 2 million 300 thousand in 1950, this number reached 3 million 100 thousand, İleri added that Adnan Menderes distributed 36 thousand 500 decares of the total 40 thousand decares of land inherited from his grandfather to the villagers of Aydın’s Çakırbeyli through donations and long-term sales. Underlining that for democracy to be effective, the opposition must also embrace democracy, İleri said, “Unfortunately, the bad habits of those years continue in the opposition’s understanding of politics.
When the opposition mentality gets stuck, it acts to disrupt the system.” he said. “The biggest harm of May 27 was that it distorted the approach to politics in Turkey.” “Thank God, I think we have repaired this to a great extent. But now the last stage here is for the CHP to confront this process, learn lessons from this process on its own behalf, and apologize to this nation.” he said. Noting that a research proposal submitted by the CHP during the discussions of the General Assembly of the Turkish Grand National Assembly on April 2, 2026 included the claim that “the coups were organized to prevent the CHP’s march to power”, İleri said, “It is 2026, the mind is still this way.” he said.
To summarize this situation, Ömer İleri said in a speech of his grandfather Tevfik İleri, “It is right for every party to want to come to power. However, it is not right to undermine the interests of the country with the ambition of coming to power at all costs.” reminded me of his expressions. Referring to the process leading to the military coup of May 27, 1960, İleri said, “The contribution of the opposition mentality of that period in the days leading up to that process should be revealed.
It should be stated that this is wrong and an apology should be made for it. This nation deserves it. Because this coup process caused great damage to this nation.” “The approach put forward by the Chairman of the Republican People’s Party at that time should be examined.” made his assessment. 116Traditional products prepared by women in Bektaş village, with a population of 360 in Çanakkale’s Ayvacık district, are offered for sale through the cooperative they established.
