DİYARBAKIR (AA) – BESTAMİ BODRUK – The water discharged from a height of 173 meters at the Karakaya Dam and Hydroelectric Power Plant (HES) in Çüngüş district of Diyarbakır turned into a visual feast. Karakaya Dam and HEPP, which was built on the Euphrates River in 1976 and completed and started to hold water in 1987, not only produces electrical energy, but also contributes to the cultivation of aquaculture and agricultural irrigation on the borders of Diyarbakır, Elazığ and Malatya with the water in its basin.
The amount of water in the basin of Karakaya Dam and HEPP, Türkiye’s third largest dam and second largest hydroelectric power plant, reached 9.5 billion cubic meters with heavy rainfall. In the Karakaya Dam and HEPP, which has an installed capacity of 1800 megawatts with a total of 6 units, 2 discharge gates of the dam were opened in the first place on May 11, after 7 years, against the risk of possible floods due to the water level approaching the maximum level.
Then, 4 more discharge gates are gradually opened and thousands of cubic meters of water are released per minute from a total of 6 spillway gates. The discharge of pressurized water from the dam set, whose body height is 173 meters, turned into a visual feast. Rainbows occasionally form in the region due to sunlight. The water discharge process is expected to continue for a while. Citizens who came to the region recorded the water discharge, which created a beautiful view, with their mobile phone cameras.
