SİVAS (AA) – SERHAT ZAFER / MUZAFFER AKYÜZ – The increase in the number of wetlands following heavy rains in Zara and Hafik districts of Sivas also increased the stork population in the region. The large and small lakes between Zara and Hafik districts and the wetlands in the region host many bird species. Those traveling on the Sivas-Erzincan highway can observe different types of birds along the way between the two districts.
The increase in the number of storks this year, which feed in the wetlands in the region and are hosted by electric poles on the side of the road, attracted attention. Ali Toprak, who lives in Canova village, told the AA correspondent that their village is located in a wetland. Stating that many bird species live in the region in addition to storks, Toprak said, “The number of storks is a little more this year due to abundant rainfall.
It was more in the past because the water regime was more proper.” he said. Stating that the birds changed their migration route due to the drought that affected the region in previous years, Toprak said, “Maybe if the waters continue like this, animals can use this place as a resting place on their migration route. I know that in our youth, birds rose in the wetland here in a way that blocked the sun’s light.” he said.
– “Storks are truly loyal animals.” Explaining that storks come to their village every year, Toprak said: “Storks are truly loyal animals. Last year, a pole collapsed in our village, it had a very large nest on it, and it went back and forth for years. The animal came back, worked hard to build the nest in the same place. Storks live in wetlands, so their numbers are high this year. Since it is a wetland, there are also anguts and all kinds of birds.
This is on the migration path of geese, we always follow it. Morning and evening. They come and go. Last year, when I went to irrigate sugar beets, I saw there were geese like a flock of sheep. You can’t count them, hundreds of them. They are a part of us, we need to give them the opportunity to give birth and raise their babies. They are living beings, just like we are.
