ISTANBUL (AA) – HİKMET FARUK BAŞER – The leg of Çiğdem Şeker, who has elephantiasis in Istanbul, and which had been swollen for 4 years and thickened approximately 3 times, regressed with the treatment applied at Başakşehir Çam and Sakura City Hospital. 30-year-old Çiğdem Şeker, who complained of swelling in her left leg that started about 10 years ago and progressed over time, was diagnosed with elephantiasis (lymphedema) following the examinations.
After Şeker gave birth 4 years ago, swelling increased, especially in the ankle and below-knee area. Over time, his left leg grew to approximately 3 times the size of his right leg. Having difficulty walking and wearing clothes, Şeker applied to Başakşehir Çam and Sakura City Hospital Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Hospital. With the intensive treatment applied here, the swelling in his left leg decreased and Şeker started walking again.
Education Coordinator of the hospital, Prof. Dr. Evrim Coşkun told the AA reporter that the patient applied to them about a year ago with a complaint of swelling in his left leg. Stating that the patient had serious difficulties in daily living activities, Coşkun said, “He had difficulty walking and wearing his clothes. We took him to inpatient treatment.” “After about 3 months of inpatient treatment, we reduced the swelling in the leg.” he said.
Emphasizing that after sufficient slimming is achieved, patients are made to wear compression garments and the process is supported with exercise, Coşkun said, “When our patient applied to us, he weighed 80 kilos, but normally he weighed 50 kilos. When his mobility was restricted due to this disease, he weighed up to 80 kilos. When we measured the patient’s weight again after taking him to inpatient treatment, it dropped to 70 kilos.
“With the treatment, we have relieved approximately 10 kilos of weight from the patient’s left leg.” he said. – “A more comfortable life is aimed by minimizing it” Patient Çiğdem Şeker said that her complaints increased after cesarean section and that she had been struggling with lymphedema for about 4 years. Stating that he started to experience serious limitations in daily life, Şeker said, “I had reached a weight almost as much as my own body weight.
I was having difficulty walking and climbing stairs. “After taking a few steps on the road, I got tired and had to rest.” he said. Explaining that there was a significant decrease in his complaints after three months of inpatient physical therapy, Şeker said, “When I was discharged at the end of 3 months, my disease had halved. This disease cannot be completely eliminated, but a more comfortable life is aimed by minimizing it.
“I think my quality of life will increase after treatment.” he said.
